Edwin Esmenda - Northern Illinois University College of Law

Edwin B. Esmenda is a 20-year veteran of the United States Army. Edwin served as an Infantry Staff Sergeant with special duties as an Instructor, Recruiter, and Drill Sergeant. Edwin deployed overseas in support of Operation Uphold Democracy (Haiti), Operation Iraqi Freedom (Iraq), and Operation Enduring Freedom (Afghanistan). Edwin retired from the U.S. Army in 2014.

Edwin is from Chicago, Illinois. Edwin received a B.A. in Communication Studies (Organizational/Corporate Communication) from Northern Illinois University (NIU) in 2016. Edwin is currently a 2L at NIU’s College of Law.  Edwin is the incoming Post Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Sycamore Post 5768 for 2018-2019. Edwin is the Judge Advocate of American Legion Sycamore Post 99.  Edwin is currently a law extern in the Office of General for the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs (IDVA) in Chicago, Illinois.

Yilun Hu - IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law

Yilun Hu enjoys helping pro se litigants file motions and get fee waivers at the Daley Center. He has also volunteered to teach ESL at the Pui-Tak Center in Chinatown. Before moving to Chicago, Yilun helped low income families file tax returns at the Chinese Newcomers Service Center. He was awarded Congressional Recognitions of Outstanding Service to the Community issued by Nancy Pelosi.  Yilun was a senior fixed-income trader and group head at Chopper Trading (now DRW) where he managed two U.S. Treasury trading groups. He is currently pursuing his J.D. at Chicago-Kent College of Law as an Honors Scholar. Yilun earned his M.S. and B.A. from UC Berkeley.

Jun Qiu - IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law

Jun Qiu is a 3L at IIT Chicago-Kent College of Law, where she is a Dean’s Honors Scholar. Jun is active in and outside of law school in various groups. She takes great pride in being able to give back to the law school and to the local community, both of which have benefitted her so much. In law school, she has served as president of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association in 2016-17; as founding president of the Tax Law Society in 2016-17, which was nominated as “Student Organization of the Year” during its very first year of existence; as founding president of the China Law Society in 2017-18;  and as president of the Law Firm Management Society in 2017-18.

Outside of law school, Jun is active in the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois (WBAI), serving as an editor for the organization’s Newsletter Committee and a member of its Annual Dinner Committee. She has also participated in the WBAI’s inaugural Leadership Institute, being one of the very few law students there. Additionally, she serves on the student board of the Chinese American Bar Association and on the Chicago Bar Association’s Future of the Practice –  Life and the Law Subcommittee. Jun also completed a judicial externship with Justice Robert E. Gordon at Illinois Appellate Court.

Jun was recently named by National Jurist as one of 20 “Law Students of the Year” nationally for her contribution to the law school and community.

Andrew Sylora - Loyola University Chicago School of Law

Andrew Sylora is a JD/MBA student at Loyola University Chicago. He currently serves as the president of Loyola’s APALSA chapter, Managing Editor for the Loyola University Chicago Law Journal and as a Health Law Fellow for Loyola’s Beazley Institute for Health Law and Policy. His areas of interest include healthcare, information technology transactions and data privacy and security. Andrew also graduated from the University of Michigan with a B.A. in Political Science and Entrepreneurship. In his spare time, he enjoys skiing and exploring Chicago’s diverse food scene.  

Shiyuan (Sheila) Zhang - John Marshall Law School

Shiyuan (Sheila) Zhang is a rising 3L at the John Marshall Law School, where she received Dean's List in 2016. Sheila is a board member of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association in law school. Sheila is active in moot court competitions. She was Quarter-Finalist in the National Moot Court Regional Round. She is currently preparing for the Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition.  Sheila's areas of interest include international trade law and admiralty law. She is working on a research topic about whether U.S. solar panel tariffs violate WTO regulations.  Sheila is currently a law clerk in the City of Chicago, Department of Law.

 

 

 

Eric Zhi - University of Chicago Law School

Eric is currently a student at the University of Chicago Law School. He will join Kirkland & Ellis Chicago upon graduation. Previously, he has practiced as a summer associate at Pircher, Nichols, and Meeks in its Chicago office, and helped clients on a variety of real estate transaction matters, including PSAs, financing, bond-for-title, and asset disposition. Eric is a chartered Financial Risk Manager (FRM), and has passed the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) level 3 examination.
