If you believe you have been a victim of a hate crime, you may be eligible for financial assistance under the Illinois Crime Victim Compensation Act. A hate crime is committed when, by reason of the actual or perceived race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, gender, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, or national origin of another individual or group of individuals, a person commits an offense against the individual or group of individuals, pursuant to The Illinois Hate Crimes Act, 720 ILCS 5/12-7.1.
Eligibility Overview: The Illinois Crime Victim Compensation Act provides financial assistance for expenses accrued as a result of a violent crime, including a hate crime.
Qualification Requirements: To qualify, you must follow certain requirements, including, but not limited to reporting to the police within 72 hours; applying with the Illinois Attorney General (https://agforms.ilattorneygeneral.net/Forms/CrimeVictimsCompensation) within 2 years of the date of the crime, or within one year of the filing of a criminal charge; and cooperating with the police and the Attorney General when requested.
Payment Amount and Covered Expenses: eligible victims and their families can receive up to $27,000 to cover expenses incurred, such as medical, hospital, and counseling costs, loss of earnings, funeral and burial costs, and more. Certain limitations apply.
